Tehran is prepared to reinitiate atomic talks with the United States as long as it is treated with "dignity" and "honor", Tehran's top diplomat has stated.

The Iranian diplomat stated only diplomacy worked, and disclosed recent overtures had come from mediators to resume discussions with the US government. He claimed Iran had zero secret atomic facilities, and Iran could not yet authorize the International Atomic Energy Agency to access struck enrichment centers for security reasons.

Navigating a Difficult Course

Araghchi is walking a challenging course since Iran wishes not to be seen to be operating from a stance of weakness, and he consistently maintained that Iran had come out more resilient militarily and psychologically from the coordinated strike on its enrichment centers in June.

He was speaking at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he reiterated that Iran had "an absolute privilege to process nuclear material within its borders that it will always maintain" – the key factor of the deadlock in the previous talks.

Earlier Negotiations Abruptly Concluded

The previous five rounds of negotiations between the US and Iran were brought to an abrupt and bitter end on 12 June when Israel, with US support, struck Tehran's atomic facilities in a fortnight-long engagement that culminated with Donald Trump declaring the facilities had been obliterated. Afterward, European countries exercised their privilege to reinstate UN-wide sanctions, but Iran maintains they have not had a substantial consequence.

Ideal Resolution Suggested

Iran's diplomats stated they felt they had reached a "ideal resolution" to the enrichment issue in prior discussions, when it was decided an local partnership with US participation could enrich uranium. The two nations would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have continued and the US could be assured that Iran's nuclear programme was exclusively peaceful.

It had not been agreed in the discussions that US nuclear scientists could function inside Iran, but that was a reasonable assumption of the partnership suggestion.
