Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and more than 40 were wounded when assailants opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The victims are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
