We are analyzing video footage and photographs shared this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
